Character Retirement Perks (GLOGueLike)

Inspired by this post by Portals and Pegasi, here is a simple system for adding "Legacy Perks" to a game of GLOG 5.

Character Retirement

Once a character reaches level 5, their player may choose to retire them from the adventuring lifestyle. Doing so unlocks a “Perk” for future characters created by the party, but the retired character becomes an NPC under the control of the DM—though some player input should be welcome if the DM needs that character to make a major decision. Retired characters may become kings, generals, high-priests, or even villains. Whatever path awaits them, the DM can no longer harm them. They’ve proved themselves against the perils of the world and pass into legend.

When you retire an adventurer, add a perk to the perk pool, according to your character's class.
New characters may take one perk from the pool, and perks may be taken by multiple characters.

Acrobat - Treasure Map. Pick any location on the world map and add a treasure map for that location to the perk pool. The map contains enough information to guide a character to the location of a valuable treasure of the DM’s choice. If the treasure is ever received, choose a new location.

Barbarian - “X” Slayer. Choose a type of foe and add its name to the perk pool. New characters who take this perk deal +1 damage to that kind of foe. They also know a legend about your retired character of your choice.

Thief - Inheritance. Choose one minor magical item from your inventory OK’d by the DM, or 300 GP. New characters who take this perk gain that item. They also gain a nickname of your choice.

Fighter - Practiced. Choose a “Notch” from your character sheet and add it to the perk pool. New characters may dictate which weapon type it benefits. New characters who take this perk also gain a gnarly scar of your choice.

Cleric - Loyal Friend. Add a level 0 peasant to the perk pool who follows your religion. A character who takes this perk gets that character as a highly loyal follower at the start of the game. Whenever a character takes this perk, they roll up that peasant's traits, but you may name them if you wish.

Wizard - Amulet of “X”. Choose a spell you know and add it to the perk pool. New characters who choose this perk start with an amulet with 1 MD that allows them to cast the chosen spell.

A Note

After presenting this idea to a member of my current group, it was well-received, and then tweaked.

If a player has another idea for a retirement perk tied to their character, they may work with the DM to define that perk. These rules are not hard and immovable, but meant to inspire.

In honor of that discussion, here's a perk from a renowned Cleric that you may wish to use in your games.

Ordrin's Blessing. Your character has been blessed by a Cleric of the Wandering. Once per day you may reroll a failed navigation check, and take the better result.
